I started this blog when I heard that periodical cicadas would be back in the Washington, DC metro area in the spring of 2013. The news came as a total shock to me (I really thought we wouldn’t see them again until Brood X was set to return in 2021). My intent was to raise awareness about the discomfort that periodical cicada invasions cause to entomophobes like me and create a community of support for bug-phobic in the areas affected by this new brood of cicadas (Brood II) through a collaborative blog and social media. It paid off. Cicadaphobia was featured in The Washington Post, The New York Times,, The New York Daily News, and West Side Rag. All writing (except for guest posts), illustration and design is my own.
